Prescribing Medication for Period Delay

< Back to policies & procedures

Purpose

This policy outlines Brooke Surgery's position on prescribing medication for the purpose of delaying menstruation.

Policy Statement

At Brooke Surgery, we are committed to providing high-quality care within the scope of our NHS contractual obligations. However, prescribing medication specifically for the purpose of delaying menstruation falls outside our contracted duties as NHS GPs. Therefore, we do not provide prescriptions for period delay.

Guidance for Patients

1. Alternative Options

  • Patients seeking to delay their period for non-medically essential reasons are advised to consult with a private healthcare provider or a specialist who can offer guidance and potential treatment options.
  • Pharmacists can also be a valuable resource. Many community pharmacists offer consultations and may provide advice or over-the-counter options for period delay.

2. Consultation and Advice

  • While we do not prescribe medication for period delay, we are available to discuss any medical concerns or provide general advice related to menstrual health and well-being.

Conclusion

We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, but our priority is to focus on our core NHS duties. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in seeking appropriate alternatives for period delay. Our commitment remains to provide the best possible care within our practice's scope and capabilities.
